Opera seria
 
[italienisch »ernste Oper«] die, - -/...re. ..ri|e, die aus der venezianischen Operntradition hervorgegangene und im 18. Jahrhundert besonders von der Neapolitanischen Schule entwickelte Gattung der Oper, die wesentlich von den klassizistischen Vorstellungen der Textdichter A. Zeno und P. Metastasio bestimmt ist: mythologische oder historische Stoffe, Beschränkung der Figurenzahl, Wechsel von handlungstragenden Rezitativen und jeweils bestimmte Affekte ausdrückenden Arien (meist in Da-capo-Form); Gegenstück der Opera buffa. Berühmte Titel waren z. B. »Artaserse« (vertont von J. A. Hasse, L. Vinci, C. W. Gluck, C. H. Graun, N. Jommelli) und »La Clemenza di Tito« (A. Caldara, L. Leo, Hasse, Gluck, Jommelli, T. Traetta, P. Anfossi, W. A. Mozart), beide mit Libretto von Metastasio.
